Janis Joplin: Ethos

Janis Joplin was born and raised in Texas until the early sixties when, she moved to California. Joplin was known for always having a bit of a rebellious streak and a passion for music. After years of small town bands, Joplin’s music career took off when she was taken underwing by a psychedelic band called “Big Brother and the Holding Company”. Width them, she began playing for grander gigs and developed a larger fan base. By the late sixties, Joplin had head off on her own solo career, later becoming notorious for helping promote sexual freedom. Joplin was able to connect to a wide audience as many teens in this era had their own phases of rebellion and began to counter their more conservative parents. Her rebellious attitude brought a large appeal to her music and was able to draw in a large population of the typical 60s forward thinking hippies. She also revolved many of her songs around feminist ideals, attracting many female listeners. She sang a lot about her sexual liberation and promoted a women’s desire and right to have sex. In her song “one night stand” this is clearly seen. Her lyrics clearly state her desire for casual sex without having to be in love with the man, a thing many women before this time would never approve of doing. Joplin’s songs were a major part of the sexual revolution and was able to draw ethos from her feminist, hippie and rock loving audience.

  1. I think this blog would have been better if you included specific songs with specific lyrics portraying ethos. The overall analysis of Joplin's motives are very interesting. She was a very influential figure in this movement and her actions are all greatly appreciated by females of her time. She was their voice and stood up for what was right.

  2. Its clear that Janis Joplin's ethos grew greatly during her musical career. Her extrinsic ethos became stronger as the sexual revolution occurred and her intrinsic ethos was powerful in her lyrics closely reflecting the feelings of many women during her time. You sum this up well in your post.

  3. I agree with Ankit. I enjoyed the post, but it could have been better with the addition of specific lyrics or a specific song. I do agree that she displayed an incredible amount of Ethos is her work. She appealed to many women during the 60's through her attitude and ability to stand up for a new cause. Many of the women that listened to and enjoyed her music could relate to Joplin and some sort of way and that is why she was so effective.
