Pathos of Janis Joplin

Janis Joplin had a specific aura about her. She knew exactly how to connect to audience and captivate them. It didn't matter if you heard the live or studio version of a song, you could feel her passion and experience what she was feeling. Her passion was one reason why she was connected to her audience. When you can feel someone is emotionally connected to their work, you feel a connection to it as well. Her lyrics in "One Night Stand" portray a feeling of freedom and going with the flow. When she says "everywhere I go, the people wanna make some time with me. That's okay, if the next day I can be free" she is conveying a feeling of contentment with her life and what goes on within it. She does this to show her audience that living freely and without worry is okay. Although her music reached a large audience, it specifically resonated with those who believed in a free lifestyle, which included free love and a disconnect from politics.

  1. I agree that Janis Joplin's blues-inspired lyrics speak to the audience about her feeling of independence. It would be interesting to mention how Joplin's tone and the tempo shifts throughout the song (slow introduction building up into a forceful chorus) and grabs the audience's attention.

  2. I think Janice Joplin really connected with her audience because she seemed to be living this free life that so many were chasing in the 60's. She became a role model for others and her music allowed her to express her shared feelings and ideas with her audience.

  3. I really liked how you described some of the lyrics to her song and how they appeal to pathos. In addition to the lyrics, maybe try talking about the different musical aspects of the song itself.
