Miscellaneous: Birth Control Ad

In 1960, the pill was approved for contraceptive use, and by 1962, millions of women in the United states were engaging in family planning. In this specific ad, the author appeals to logical faculties of the American public. This poster is intended to persuade men to encourage their significant others to use birth control. The central focus of the poster is the pregnant man, and the headline "Would you be more careful if  was you that got pregnant?". The image alone would have been somewhat shocking to audiences, but beyond that it encourages some serious thought. This poster puts the idea of pregnancy in a man's head, and forces them to think from an alternate perspective. If they were the ones getting pregnant, wouldn't they want to use birth control? The bottom of the ad reads "Contraception is one of the facts of life", and fast forwarding today it would certainly seem so.

  1. I really like the picture it brings the idea of pregnancy and family to the forefront of the minds of men. It is also comical because some men devalue pregnancy and with this man being pregnant in the photo the idea of pregnancy is no longer taken as a joke to men and makes them take more into consider when having sex with women.

  2. This picture is extremely interesting because it does a great job of switching the roles of men and women around. The picture along with the question made men truly think about contraception. Just like in today's society, it was easy for men to criticize women for taking birth control because it wasn't the men that were getting pregnant. If the roles were to switch, men would understand women's arguments supporting contraception.

  3. This picture is very powerful and I think it uses many rhetorical devices. The reason the picture is so powerful is because it makes men think about what it would be like to birth a child. When we first started class we watched a video about a lady who secretly took birth control behind her husbands back. She only wanted two kids but her husband wanted five. This poster is intended for men like him. I think men need to realize the struggle women go through when giving birth to a child.

  4. I think that this advertisement is very interesting because it's targeting males rather than females. For the most part it seems most birth control ads target women but this new audience gives the ad a feel of originality.

  5. I find this adverstisement quite humourous, mostly because it uses the image of something that is not physically possible. Because of this I believe the ad falls short of accomplishing it's goals because I don't believe men would read much into this other than the photoshopped picture of a pregnant man.
