Kairos of Janis Joplin

Janis Joplin was an American singer/songwriter during the 1960s. Her rise to fame paralleled with the rise of the Feminist movement at the time. Joplin was indirectly a huge influence on young women and sexual freedom. Joplin's urge to be equal to men and sexual liberated was shown through her music, reputation, body language, and clothing and hair style. She was a strong female in a male-dominated music industry, being the one of the few female headliners at the historic Woodstock Music Festival. Joplin was a free spirit who yearned to feel and express her feelings regardless of stigmatization. She constantly challenged traditional ideals by encouraging individualism and sexual fluidity. Also, she was very open about her support of Civil Rights, individual freedom, and feminism. The 1960s were a prime time for Joplin to express her views because it was a time where political and social change was on the rise. People readily listened to her message and hopped on the freedom bandwagon.

  2. I agree that Janis Joplin's song was aptly timed. Expressing the belief in sexual freedom furthered the discussion that was underway at the time. If anything her popularity helped to shed a positive light on the movement.

  3. Janis Joplin was the perfect artist for the 1960's... I agree that her music came at a perfect time. The 1960's was a decade full of change, challenging opinions, and new beliefs. Janis Joplin challenged almost every aspect of the beliefs of women and the sexual revolution. Her music came at a time where many women were attempting to explore their sexual lives; they needed someone with Joplin's credibility to spark the movement.
